Something In Your Voice was a show by Emergency Chorus, still in development. I collaborated on the development of the show, and composed the sound for the most recent showing.

A Portrait of the Universe; 2017
45 minutes

Not a play! A Portrait of the universe was a piece of sound art loosely based on the second law of thermodynamics. A pure sine wave morphs slowly into white noise as collections of objects are destroyed with a selection of hammers and shears by the performer, the sound of the breaking and deteriorating overlaid into a slowly ever more pounding feedback loop. The universe distilled into a single relentless metaphor - and, somewhere almost too quiet to hear - an apology.

This was the first piece of work I ever made that really clicked, that had the sort of overwhelming accreting effect I wanted it to. I don’t know if this exact piece will get remade, but I’d love to return to this sort of textless sound based work sometime. A recording exists if you’re curios, though it’s not the sort of piece that translates well to recording.

I don’t know who took the image. Possibly Ben Kulvichit? I think most likely Hazel Smith.
